The Sweetest Lie

ana aguilar

To the one I have loved,
To the one I have given all.
To the one… To the one…
I miss you,

I miss your smile. The way you would laugh.
The way your eyes would crinkle under the moonlight.
You used to come by, drop me flowers.
You used to come by, with coffee.
You used to… You used to…

How we would sneak out to dates.
How we would laugh at all the littlest things that came to our heads.
How we would dance under the rainy night sky.
With the lights of your car, the only source to guide our steps.
How our voices bellowed under hooded cars, and engines loud.

How… How…
I thought it would be our forever.
I thought I was the lucky one.
I thought… I thought…

The picture I found,
The memories of another.
The same settings we did. Same places we went.
Same accessories we wore.

Her laugh, more genuine than mine. Her smile, lighting up the room with one look.
You hold her hand, as if she was the most precious thing in the world.
And to you, she very well may be.

I left.
Our memories, burned into the ashes of our—your fireplace.
Our feelings, torn and buried.
I thought I loved you.

Turns out, my love was just an empty keychain you would kiss for good luck.
